The action inside a typical beehive appears frenzied but actually is as controlled as a space-shuttle launch. The two categories of residents-house bees and field bees, perform a great variety of chores. The house bees include house keepers, who clear up debris. If an object is too long to move – a mouse for example, that has invaded the hive and been stung to death – the housekeepers remove its hair and mummify it with propolis, a resin gathered from trees. Other house bees include ventilators, who stand near the entrance whirring their wings to air-condition the interior, and undertakers, who remove dead bees from the hive.
Then there are the hive workers whose main job is building new combs to store honey. Beeswax, assort of fat, is extruded from glands on the underside of the builder’s abdomen. After removing the wax with their feet, the bees chew it into tiny balls to build an engineering marvel the two layered, six sided honeycomb used for raising the young and storing honey. Repairer bees mend old combs, while cappers spread wax on newly finished comb layers between and around each comb, moreover, these masterly engineers construct an elaborate road system of “bee spaces” from half a centimetre to a centimetre wide.

Do you know why July 21, 1969 is famous? It is famous because man stood on the moon on that day. Perhaps when you are grown up, you may be able to visit the moon, Stay there in houses under the ground, and travel from the moon to some of the stars.
The moon looks far away in the sky, doesn’t it? But it is the nearest body to the earth. It is about as big as Africa and Europe put together. There is no air on the moon and no water either and this is the reason why nothing can live there. Because there is no air, it is either very hot or very cold on the moon.
There is another strange thing about the moon. A day on the moon is two weeks long and so is the moon night. The moon is not flat, and we can see the dark shadows of mountains when we look at it. They give the moon a face and small children say, “Look at the man on the moon”. The highest mountain on the moon is higher than Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world.
i) What happened on July 21, 1969?
ii) a) ‘The nearest body to earth is moon’ – State whether this statement is true or false according to the passage.
b) What is the length of a night on the moon?
iii) Is there life on moon? Why ( not) ?
iv) What gives the moon a ‘face’?
